Periodontal regenerative therapy aims to completely restore the tooth’s supporting tissues, i.e., wound healing after therapy is characterized by the formation of new cementum with functionally oriented inserting collagen fibers on the previously exposed/affected portion of the root, paralleled with new alveolar bone formation, and a periodontal ligament with physiologic width and composition. This can be achieved in the clinic by a variety of techniques, for example by using guided tissue regeneration membranes, biologics, bone grafts/substitutes as mono-therapies or combinations thereof. The magnitude of improvement depends largely on operator skills, not only in terms of dexterity but also on the ability to choose the best approach regarding the surgical technique and the regenerative technology based on patient- and site-specific characteristics. The presentation gives a summary of the biological background of periodontal regenerative procedures with focus on their clinical application in intrabony and furcation defects. Which technology in which indication, and critical clinical factors for success will be discussed.

During the practical part of the seminar, 4 types of periodontal defects in a specially designed model will be treated each with a different regenerative approach according to the indication:

- biologics
- biologics in combination with a bone substitute
- guided tissue regeneration (membrane)
- guided tissue regeneration in combination with a bone substitute

The model is constructed to allow training in incision placement, application of the regenerative material, and suturing.
